Amazing rare find - an English Brass Spit Jack or "Bottle" Jack. This fully functioning kitchen tool from the mid 1800's was the original rotisserie cooker. A homemaker used this to hang meat, fish, or vegetables inside a firplace or over a stove to slowly cook.
The solid brass casting houses the winding mechanism and hangs from a small chain. The "rotisserie" or spit wheel hangs below with four hangers. The counter weight hangs underneath the wheel and actuates the gears inside. You can wind it with an original brass key (included) and watch it run for hours. Inscribed on the side is - G.Walter & Co - WARRANTED - IMPROVED.
