THIS ITEM IS SOLD - Antique Primitive Cast Double Betty Lamp.
Great piece of primitive lighting. This lamp has it's original twisted hanger and also has an multilevel adjustment for the upper resevoir of the betty lamp to allow the lower wick to burn freely. Simplistic in design it covered the basic needs of our early forefathers. While vegetable oil was used in the ancient lamps, fish oil or animal grease was commonly burned in the Betty lamps. This produced a yellowish flickering light and a disagreeable smoke and odor. In 1740 Benjamin Franklin observed that two whale oil wicks produced three times the illumination and the double betty lamp was born.
