Fantastic 1700's French pewter charger. This charger is right at 10.25 " inches round with scalloped edges and very heavy, no maker's mark was found but this plate was heavily hammered to depict it's subject. Louis Auguste (Dauphin) De France was a title of royalty given to the heir apparent to the throne of France. Literally Dauphin, French for dolphin as a reference to the animal they bore on their flag. The title Dauphin was abolished by the French constitution in 1791. Louis Auguste Dauphin became King Louis XVI. His reign began in 1754 and lasted to 1793 when he was beheaded for treason by guillotine at the height of the French revolution. The only French monarch to ever be beheaded. He was married to Marie Antoinette who was also beheaded in 1793. This is truly a original piece whether exclusive or small production piece. Fantastic primitive wall hanging.
