THIS ITEM IS SOLD - Original 1600's Rush Lamp - Spring loaded reed holder on original wood stand. Jaws have pattern to hold rush reed or wick in place.
Pre-dating even the candle, rush lamps were made to hold a rush stem or reed in place at a specific angle for optimum light. A hand forged rush lamp of this style may have been placed on the floor due to it's height or used to increase the spread of light possibly over a dining table, etc.
